What is FASTag?

FASTag is an electronic toll collection system in India, designed to make toll payments cashless, efficient, and hassle-free. Here’s a breakdown of what it is and how it works

  • Technology: It’s a small, reloadable tag that uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology.
  • Placement: The tag is affixed to the windshield of your vehicle.
  • Function: As your vehicle drives through a designated FASTag lane at a toll plaza, a scanner reads the tag and the toll amount is automatically deducted from a linked account.
  • Mandatory: Since 2021, FASTag has been mandatory for all four-wheelers on national highways in India. Vehicles without a FASTag in the designated lane are required to pay double the toll amount.

How Does It Work?

  1. Tag Acquisition: You can purchase a FASTag from authorized banks, online platforms, or point-of-sale locations at toll plazas.
  2. Linking an Account: The tag is linked to a prepaid account, a savings/current bank account, or a digital wallet.
  3. Automatic Deduction: When you pass through a FASTag lane at a toll plaza, the RFID scanner reads your tag.
  4. Transaction: The toll amount is automatically debited from your linked account.
  5. Notifications: You receive an SMS and/or email alert for every transaction, keeping you informed of your balance and expenditures.

Benefits of FASTag:

  • Time and Fuel Savings: It eliminates the need to stop and wait in long queues at toll plazas, which reduces travel time and saves fuel.
  • Cashless Convenience: You don’t need to carry cash for toll payments.
  • Online Management: You can easily recharge your FASTag account and manage your transaction history online through mobile apps or web portals.
  • Reduced Congestion: The automated system helps to streamline traffic flow and reduce jams at toll booths.
  • Environmental Impact: Less idling time for vehicles contributes to lower carbon emissions.
