Digital Pensioner Card Scam 2026 is targeting pensioners through WhatsApp/SMS links that mimic bank/government sites and steal OTP access.
Dated 05.03.2026 : The Modus Operandi :
Scammers are sending WhatsApp messages and SMS claiming that a “New Digital Pensioner Card” or “UAN-linked Smart Card” is now mandatory to continue receiving monthly pensions.
The Hook: You receive a link to “Apply” or “Verify” your PPO (Pension Payment Order) details for the new card.
The Trap: The link leads to a fake website that looks exactly like a government or bank portal.
The Theft: It asks for your OTP or requests you to change your registered mobile number. Once they have access, your entire savings can be drained in minutes.
Crucial Security Reminders for 2026
To keep your hard-earned retirement savings safe, always follow these four “Golden Rules”:
- Rule 1: No “Digital Arrests” Exist Law enforcement agencies (CBI, Police, Customs) will never interrogate you over a WhatsApp video call or ask you to stay on a call for “Digital Arrest.” If someone claims you are under arrest and demands a “security deposit” transfer, it is a 100% scam. Hang up immediately.
- Rule 2: Banks Never Ask for OTPs to “Update” Cards Whether it’s a Pensioner Card, ATM Card, or Life Certificate (Jeevan Pramaan), no legitimate bank will ever ask for your OTP, PIN, or CVV to issue or update a card.
- Rule 3: Verify the Link Before Clicking Only use official portals. For Indian pensioners, the only valid sources are:
- Official Bank Portals (e.g., SBI, PNB, IOB)
- pensionersportal.gov.in
- jeevanpramaan.gov.in
- Avoid any link that comes via WhatsApp or a private mobile number.
- Rule 4: The “Golden Hour” Reporting If you or someone you know has been scammed, every minute counts.
- Call 1930 immediately (National Cybercrime Helpline).
- Report the incident on www.cybercrime.gov.in.
- If reported within the first 1-2 hours (The Golden Hour), there is a high chance the bank can freeze the money before the scammer withdraws it.

- Ignore “Digital Arrest”: Real Indian law enforcement agencies never conduct interrogations via WhatsApp video calls or ask for money transfers to “verify” funds.
